The term Social refers to a characteristic of living organisms (humans in particular, though biologists also apply the term to populations of other animals). It always refers to the interaction of organisms with other organisms and to their collective co-existence, irrespective of whether they are aware of it or not, and irrespective of whether the interaction is voluntary or involuntary.

Is social ballroom a good way to start before learning competitive?
Q. I'm 17 years old and I just started social ballroom dance lessons. I love it so much and I realize I would like to learn how to compete. But where I live I would have to drive an hour and a half to find a place that teaches competitive ballroom. Is taking social ballroom a good start for now to learn the basics? How long does it take for someone to go pro usually? I dont have any guys that would be my partner either.

A. Social ballroom is the first step, but depending on what style you want end up competing in you want to get started in that style as soon as possible. Social ballroom is typically American styling, and while there are sections of competitions reserved for American Style Rhythm and Smooth, it is very common to compete International Style Latin and Standard. Both styles have very distinct differences and to be able to place in a competition means learning and perfecting that certain style. To go professional in ballroom takes years and years of practice and competing and winning. Start learning the bronze, silver, and gold steps for the dances you want to compete in and then find a competition you can compete in. Since you're 17 there are… [cont.]

What were the social norms during the time Sigmund Freud lived in?
Q. I am doing a report on Sigmund Freud and I am trying to figure out the social norms during the time when he lived in Austria Hungary. I am interested in the social norms that could have caused him to become an enemy of th people when he disagreed with them.

A. I'm don't know where the previous responders got their information, but in the century and country where I live, Sigmund Freud preceded the Nazis by quite some time! Being Austrian by nationality, I doubt that he was much influenced by Queen Victoria of England, either. If you read anything at all about him, I suspect you'll find quite a lot about the social norms of his time. Some of the more glaringly obvious would be the fact that sex was a taboo topic and so people had lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of hangups about it, which is why his theories of psychology are all about sex and people's hangups about sex. Another one is the fact that men dominated women (also known as patriarchy in anthropology) which he put in sexual… [cont.]

What happens to the social security taxes paid by a non-resident?
Q. If some foreign national has worked for more than 17 years, she's now 58, in usa. She paid social security tax, can she get it back? She would never use any of social security benefits. Coz' she is going back to her country next couple of month. Thanks

A. If she has paid in to Social Security for that long, she will be eligible to collect it when she reaches retirement age. The fact that she is moving back to her home country is irrelevant as she has enough paid in quarters to qualify for benefits. Alternatively there may be a tax treaty between her country and the US that would give her equivalent credit for whatever national retirement plan is offered in her country. In that case she would generally qualify for that based upon the US taxable wages earned.
