There are programs not only in the Marines but in all the branches that if you enlist and apply for the school can go from enlisted to officer. But as best I can say in a nut shell the officer has a lot more responsibility than the enlisted. They must relies upon the enlisted to do the job but in the end the officer is held responsible he/she must often decide whom they will put in charge of something.
