Newfoundland and Labrador (pronounced / n juː f ən d ˈ l æ n d ən d l æ b r ə ˈ d ɔr /; French: Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador, Irish: Talamh an Éisc agus Labradar, Latin: Terra Nova) is a province of Canada on the country's Atlantic coast in northeastern North America. This easternmost Canadian province comprises two main parts: the island of Newfoundland off the country's eastern coast, and Labrador on the mainland to the northwest of the island.

A former colony and dominion of the United Kingdom, it became the tenth province to enter the Canadian Confederation on 31 March 1949, named simply as Newfoundland. Since 1964, the province's government has referred to itself as the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and on 6 December 2001, an amendment was made to the Constitution of Canada to change the province's official name to Newfoundland and Labrador. In day-to-day conversation, however, Canadians generally still refer to the province itself as Newfoundland and to the region on the Canadian mainland as Labrador.

As of January 2010, the province's population is estimated to be 510,805. Approximately 94% of the province's population resides on the Island of Newfoundland (including its associated smaller islands). The Island of Newfoundland has its own dialects of the English, French, and Irish languages. The English dialect in Labrador shares much with that of Newfoundland. Labrador also has its own dialects of Innu-aimun and Inuktitut.

Is Newfoundland and Labrador separate or are they together?
Q. And if they are together, who would you call someone from there? Please explain.

A. same province. it's just that half of the province is an island, and the other half is attached to canada. i don't remember which one's which. but they are the same province. some ppl just like to call one newfoudland, and one labrador. i think it's newfoundland that's sticking on to Quebec, and Labrador that is an island, but they are one province. and just call them Canadians, since it is part of Canada.

Question about Newfoundland and Labrador , Canada?
Q. What is it like to live in Newfoundland or Labrador? Please give details. Pros and cons?
Asked by T - Tue Apr 1 12:51:00 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It depends on where you live. Some places are more remote then others, closer to St. John's there are more people, more shopping centres, and generally more work. Some things are cheaper compared to the rest of Canada. But because the Newfoundland portion of the province is an island some items cost more because of shipping. Minimum wage is now $8 an hour. If you like to travel and you're on the island part you need to take plane to the mainland or ferry. Travel can be a bit more expensive. Rent in the St. John's and Mount Pearl area is anywhere from $400 for a smaller or shared apartment to $1000 or more for large apartments or small houses. If you want to buy a nice size family home in St. John's area expect to pay $100,000 or… [cont.]
